Educational Events for Veterans Day

In honor of Veterans Day, the Education Department at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum is hosting "Thank a Veteran," a day of fun-filled activities for all ages!

Come to the museum and show your gratitude to local veterans for their years of dedicated service. Your cards will be distributed to the VA Hospital in Hampton the following week.

We will also have Jim Callear, a WWII reenactor, come to the museum and set up a WWII Recruiting exhibit in the "Battle of the Atlantic" gallery from 10am to 5pm. The exhibit will include the display of many original WWII items from his collection with uniforms, helmets, 48 star flags, weapons, books, a 1943 calender and typewriters just to mention a few of the items!

As always, these programs are offered free of charge. Come and enjoy the fun!

Great White Fleet photo-Crossing the Line Ceremony

This photo is from a sailor's scrapbook from the museum's collection of the 1907-09 voyage of the Great White Fleet. The officer is Rear Admiral Richard Wainwright, who is about to be dumped head first into a pool of salt water during the Fleet's first "Crossing the Line" ceremony. The flag officer was one of thousands of officers and sailors welcomed into Neptunus Rex's realm during the voyage. Wainwright was a war hero for his efforts during the Spanish-American War and one of the Fleet's senior officers. Nonetheless, Neptunus Rex shows favors to no one...

Bob Feller, Hall of Famer and Navy Veteran

This is a picture from the museum's collection of Hall of Famer Bob Feller in 1942 at Naval Training Station Norfolk's McClure Field. On December 9, 1941, Feller put his baseball career on hold and enlisted in the United States Navy. He played on the NTS team as a pitcher while learning how to be a gunner's mate. He later served on the battleship USS Alabama (BB-60). The museum is currently working on an exhibit about McClure Field, its role in World War II, and its current use. The Field is one of the oldest brick baseball stadiums in the nation.
