Bob Feller, Hall of Famer and Navy Veteran

This is a picture from the museum's collection of Hall of Famer Bob Feller in 1942 at Naval Training Station Norfolk's McClure Field. On December 9, 1941, Feller put his baseball career on hold and enlisted in the United States Navy. He played on the NTS team as a pitcher while learning how to be a gunner's mate. He later served on the battleship USS Alabama (BB-60). The museum is currently working on an exhibit about McClure Field, its role in World War II, and its current use. The Field is one of the oldest brick baseball stadiums in the nation.
